Retirement Protection

Protect your ability
to make choices.

Retirement protection includes more than managing market risk. Consider access to cash, family obligations, care costs, longevity, and income needs together.

THE RISKS BEYOND THE MARKET

Different risks need different responses.

A market decline, an unexpected need for care, the loss of a spouse, or a long retirement can affect a plan in different ways. A single product cannot resolve every uncertainty.

Review accessible reserves, existing guaranteed income, insurance coverage, debt, withdrawal plans, and the needs of a surviving spouse or partner. Decisions about protection should fit around those realities.

Keep liquidity in the picture.

Protection that leaves you unable to meet a near-term expense can create a different problem. Before committing assets to an annuity or permanent policy, consider emergency needs and planned spending outside the contract.

An annuity doesn’t have to be your whole retirement plan. Some people may have no appropriate annuity need. Others may benefit from a modest protected-income allocation. Someone else may have a larger income-planning need.

There is no universal percentage. The decision depends on your income, expenses, assets, liabilities, debt, time horizon, liquidity, risk tolerance, retirement and legacy goals, health and longevity considerations, and existing resources such as Social Security, pensions, and other investments.

Annuities are long-term insurance contracts and are not suitable for everyone. Surrender periods, surrender charges, withdrawal restrictions, fees, and tax consequences may apply. Guarantees are subject to contract terms and the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. Product features and availability vary by carrier and state.
